Before & After “set up” Trim

This horse is shod with metal shoes on the front hooves and incorrectly trimmed in the hind hooves. You can see discomfort and brace in his body and on his face.

After pulling shoes and performing what we call a (set up) trim beginning to restore function back to his hooves you can see relaxation and comfort restored to his body.

Not only do we see comfort in hooves but also issues of back and body discomfort resolve when hooves are correctly trimmed and cared for. Before shoes pulled and set up trim performed.

The Mighty Mini

The Mighty Mini is so often miss understood in the world of hoof care.

First off they are the easiest of keepers, and easily become obese.  They should never be fed processed feeds/supplements and grain.

They were bred for long hours of work, with minimal feed.

Obesity in horses leads to many problems, one of the worst being their feet.  They can get sore and suffer from a range of laminitis problems, which may lead to founder.  This is a very painful problem for horses where the laminia holding the bone to the outer wall of the hoof lets go and rotates down toward the sole.

The main thing to keep in mind for optimal health for your mini, is hoof care by someone qualified every 6 weeks.  A strict diet of low nutrient, high fiber forage.  Barley or Oat straw is a wonderful “filler” to keep them foraging, like mother nature intended all day and night, with a flake or two of hay 2x a day mixed in.  Access to clean water and a loose mineral is important as well.  Lastly, loads of exercise….living with more than 2 horses always encourages more movement.

How Early Should you Start Trimming Foals?

Here at Success with Horses, within the first month, we start trimming to keep the foot in balance and joints growing in a healthy way. Too often young horse’s hoof care is ignored, until they are started under saddle, around the age of two.

The terrible truth is that our rush to ride young horses creates lifelong lameness issues.

We discourage this practice, because of the fact that the coffin bone of the hoof is still growing in width till the age of 6-8 yrs in some breeds. All the joints above the hoof are growing and developing as well. Hoof balance/function is key to avoid early lameness issues. In the wild young foals/horses travel great distances everyday in search of food and water. The terrain they are living on determines how well the hoof is naturally worn.

The foal in this example is my beautiful Morab filly, Foxxy. She grew up on big hills, and rocky terrain, turned out 24/7, no matter what the weather… Super fit and sassy!

Trim Balance is Key!

This illustrates that the hoof grows forward every trim cycle, and must be trimmed BACK, not FLAT.
The toe, heels and bar need to be trimmed back, and put into alignment with the limb every month or the horse will risk lameness issues and mobility restrictions.

How to prevent SNOW BALLS  in your horses hooves

This time of year, in the northern hemisphere, horses have a major problem.

The problem is with snow build up in their hooves.
We have all seen the hammer and chisel at the barn door so they can walk on the concrete without slipping.
In reality, for the horse with a FUNCTIONAL hoof shape (one that has been shaped as mother nature intended it to be), following the sole line in a bowl shape, rather than the flat rim trim most conventional farriers do, allows for optimal FLEXION of the capsule, popping out the snow divots every 5 or so steps.
When the horse needs a trim, and the wall length gets too high, the hoof does not flex as easily, leading to horses walking around on the horrid snow balls.
Optimal function also brings optimal blood supply for improved growth, and faster healing of the hoof and ideal circulation to the rest of the horse, leading to a healthier equine!

Transforming Hoof Care

This transformation took 1.5 yrs of regular trims every 5-6 weeks.

This horse was set to be euthanized. After 2 yrs of traditional care, which included regular shoes and Vet visits.

Success With Horses was the last resort.

Movement, clean diet (NO processed feeds)and regular correct and therapeutic trims, healed her feet.
